Baptism

Baptism (also called Christening) is one of the great sacraments of the church. Baptisms at Holy Trinity and at St Hugh’s normally take place at the 9 am Eucharist at St Hugh’s or the 11 am Eucharist at Holy Trinity. In certain circumstances, by arrangement with Fr Jeremy, baptisms are possible at other times.

We baptise both children and adults.

Everyone is welcome to explore baptism in one of our churches. If you are considering this, Fr Jeremy will be happy to meet with you to discuss what being baptised means and what will happen at the service. If a child being baptised, the normal number of godparents is two godfathers and a godmother for a boy and two godmothers and a godfather for a girl. However, this is a tradition and not a strict rule although godparents MUST themselves have been baptised. The best people to choose as godparents are people who will be supportive to the child and likely to be involved in the child’s life for a long time and who can help to keep contact between the life of the child and the life of the church.

We baptise adults most commonly at the Easter Vigil, on the Saturday evening before Easter Day. Usually for an adult, those supporting the person being baptised are called sponsors rather than godparents.
